I was talking with Jim Truland last night, and he informed me he had attended the funeral of Phil Marnoch. I did not know he had died. Big Phil was a bit of a legend in his own time,a big big man, built like Swarznigger, who had been member of PDAA and Stormont AC.
Most people of my generation knew Big Phil, as he was a bouncer, at most events in Perth in his younger days, any of the dance halls, City Hall, Salutation Hotel, skating steward at the old Ice Rink, would find Phil and brother Ian on duty sorting out any bother. As a salmon fisher Phil was really good and caught legions of fish, and was not short at telling anyone fishing in front of him, to move out of the way, as Phil had a fish on, and was coming through! As a young novice I often fished in front of him, at Rome Croy, and would be on alert from the off, waiting for the inevitable roar from Phil that he had a fish on. Being a mountain of a man, he had a 20 foot palakona cane rod, which had a steel reinforced center, and he could virtually cast to the other side.Nice memory of happier fishing days.
